This year, the Alternative Economic and Monetary Systems (AEMS) summer university will take place from 13th July to 31st July 2026 in Vienna, Austria. This initiative is the result of a collaboration between OeAD student housing, BOKU University Vienna (BOKU) and representatives of the Economy for the Common Good (ECOnGOOD), as well as more than 80 international supporting institutions and partner universities.

This interdisciplinary program presents and discusses the state of the art in alternative economic and monetary systems. Overwhelming evidence shows that our current economic model based on endless growth is destroying our planet’s ecosystem and contributing to the global climate crisis. The summer university sheds light on approaches and reform proposals that can make a real difference. AEMS offers space for critical thinking and open discussion of ideas and concepts with distinguished experts from various scientific fields. Through lectures, workshops, and discussion panels, participants gain a deeper understanding of the intricate interactions between society, ecology, and economy.

The summer programme is composed of four modules: Basics & Nature, Finance & Money, Economics with Social and Ecological Values and A social ecological transformation. This hands-on learning experience includes lectures, panel discussions, workshops, excursions, simulations, group projects, public events, and social activities. Upon successful completion, international participants receive a certificate from BOKU University, awarding them with 5 ECTS points (125 study hours) and have the chance to stay in Vienna the week before the program starts, free of charge. AEMS has welcomed more than 500 alumni across 85 nations so far!
